SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS
At HYER GOODS, we pride ourselves on using sustainable materials. We believe the most sustainable material is the one that already exists! That's why all our leather goods are hand-crafted from Better Leather:
Better Leather is a term we coined to refer to the quality materials leftover from the production and manufacturing of other leather goods.
They can be scraps as small as a quarter (great for covered snaps!) or as large as the body of a guitar (great for purses!). We lovingly call our goods Trash Bags but there's nothing trashy about them. Learn more why we think Better Leather is the most sustainable material there is below.
Why Better Leather (aka waste)?
Every year, 6.3 million tons of textiles are wasted during the design and production process (Ellen MacArthur Foundation). By upcycling that waste into new things, we eliminate the energy needed to create new materials, while simultaneously reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill. This results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions. We use real leather scraps because, unlike vegan leather, if they ever enter a landfill they are organic matter and will biodegrade in a reasonable amount of time.
We'd rather your goods never make it to a landfill, though! We help keep used HYER GOODS in circulation by enabling customers to re-sell their preloved handbags and wallets through our resale platform HYER UP. It's called Circular Fashion and it's the future.
