HYER GOODS was born to make beautiful product out of the tremendous amount of waste out there.
Globally the fashion industry may produce enough manufacturing waste to cover all of North Korea (New York Times). That’s over 46,000 miles worth of trash every year. Our mission at Hyer Goods is to design out pollution. We take that waste and upcycle it into pieces that you love and that will last for generations, starting with leather.
WHAT IS BETTER LEATHER?
Better leather is a term we coined to refer to the quality materials left over from the manufacturing process of other leather goods. They can be scraps as small as a quarter (great for covered snaps!) or as large as the body of a guitar (great for purses!). Sometimes the skins are what's referred to as "deadstock," skins that have been abandoned by their creator. 100% of the material we use is better leather. And since our factory only uses skins that are the by-product of meat consumption, we can guarantee that no animals were harmed for the sake of their skin.
Because we use waste skins, we cannot control all of the processes that the skins go through, however all of our skins are tested for chrome VI after aging, ensuring the leather is safe to wear. We like using veg tanned skins when possible, which will be noted in the product specs of each product it applies to.
OUR IMPACT
By upcycling waste, we eliminate the massive energy footprint needed to cultivate land, livestock, crops and fertilizers, while simultaneously reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill. This results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
WHATS IN THE BOX?
We ship PLASTIC FREE. Our boxes, mailers, tape and postcards are all made from 100% recycled materials and are both recyclable and biodegradable.
The tissue currently used to stuff our bags is not recycled-- it comes straight from the factory and they are working on sourcing something recycled as we speak! Many brands re-do their packaging for the customer, but we prefer to reuse what they currently have available, rather than to waste it just to replace it with something recycled. Finding a recycled tissue is a priority for 2020.
WHO MADE MY GOODS?
We believe sustainability is about both people and planet. We are proud that HYER GOODS are hand-crafted at a female-owned factory in India. Our factory complies with SEDEX standards, one of the world's leading bodies for guaranteeing ethical treatment of workers. They have systems in place to ensure there is zero groundwater contamination. They are not only experts in leather construction, but they share our vision for waste reduction. They are currently producing over 13,000 pounds of waste every year, but we are here to change that.
